A Design Studio for the Built World.

VCS Design was created to bridge the gap between design intent and built reality. We operate as a design-led studio focused on environmental graphic design, wayfinding, and architectural signage, with a clear understanding of how projects move from concept to fabrication and installation.

Our work is shaped by the belief that good design must hold up in the real world. It must respond to architecture, communicate clearly with people, and account for the practical constraints that define successful projects. By working within a fully integrated design-build environment, we are able to align creative vision with execution from the very beginning.

VCS Design brings clarity to complex environments through thoughtful systems, disciplined process, and design that is meant to be built.

Design Leadership Shaped by Experience.

VCS Design is led by JJ Potasiewicz, a designer with more than 30 years of experience shaping signage, wayfinding, and environmental graphic systems for complex built environments.

JJ’s work is grounded in a belief that design is ultimately a form of communication. It must help people understand where they are, where they are going, and what a place represents. Over the course of his career, he has worked across all phases of design, from early schematic concepts through design development, construction documentation, and coordination with fabrication and installation teams.

That experience has shaped a practical design philosophy. Every project is approached with an understanding of how decisions made early will affect cost, constructability, schedule, and long-term performance. Materials, typography, form, and hierarchy are considered not just for their visual impact, but for how they will live in the built world.

As Creative Director, JJ leads design strategy, creative direction, and client collaboration. His role is to ensure that each project balances clarity, character, and craft, and that design intent carries through from concept to completion.

A 75-Year Foundation

VCS Design operates within Valley City Sign Company, a family-owned manufacturer with more than 75 years of experience delivering signage projects across the United States.

With a 65,000-square-foot fabrication facility and in-house capabilities spanning manufacturing, finishing, and installation, Valley City provides the production depth and operational stability required to deliver complex work reliably. This foundation allows design decisions to be informed by real-world constraints from the outset, rather than adjusted late in the process.

For clients, this means fewer disconnects between intent and execution. Design concepts are developed with a clear understanding of materials, fabrication methods, installation conditions, and long-term performance. The result is a more efficient process, greater predictability, and built work that reflects the original design vision.

Valley City’s longevity is not incidental. It reflects a culture of craftsmanship, accountability, and follow-through that directly supports the way VCS Design approaches its work.

The Partnership

VCS Design is led by a partnership that brings together creative leadership and operational depth. JJ Potasiewicz and Wade Halma serve as Principals, combining complementary experience that allows design intent and execution to remain aligned throughout a project’s life cycle.

JJ leads creative direction, design strategy, and client collaboration. Wade leads operations, fabrication, and installation through his role at Valley City Sign Company. Together, they ensure that ideas are developed with a clear understanding of how they will be built, delivered, and maintained.

This partnership removes the traditional divide between design and production. Decisions are made collaboratively, with early input from both creative and operational perspectives. The result is a more disciplined process, clearer communication, and outcomes that reflect both strong design thinking and real-world practicality.

By working as an integrated team, VCS Design is able to provide clients with a level of continuity and accountability that is difficult to achieve in more fragmented project models.

An Elemental Process

process.png

Design at VCS Design follows a clear and disciplined progression, shaped by experience across both creative development and real-world execution.

Each phase builds intentionally on the one before it. Early work focuses on understanding context, defining intent, and establishing a strong conceptual foundation. As projects move forward, ideas are refined, documented, and prepared for fabrication with increasing precision.

Because we operate within a fully integrated design-build environment, considerations around materials, constructability, and installation are part of the process from the very beginning. This reduces late-stage surprises and allows design intent to carry through to the built outcome.

Our process is structured, but not rigid. It adapts to the needs of each project while maintaining a clear path from concept to completion.

Drop us a line - we'd love to talk about your next project.
